Why Recycling Motor Oil Is Important

Engine oil change places

If you drive a car on a daily basis, you know how critical it is to use the best motor oil for the efficient running of your engine. Drivers in America yield approximately 1.3 billion gallons of used oil annually. After choosing the recommended motor oil and using it in your vehicle, where does it go from there?

Because motor oil is composed of chemical compounds that are both petroleum-based and made of non-petroleum materials, it is important to dispose of it properly after it has been used in engines. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that 200 million gallons of motor oil is discarded irresponsibly after use every year.

But motor oil does not go bad. It simply becomes dirty from use, which is why recycling it is important. In fact, recycling can save money and resources. Whereas 42 gallons of crude oil are needed to make 2.5 quarts of of motor oil, if you were to recycle a gallon of oil, you would get the same amount back for repeated use.
